$3.25M a record sale for Honus Wagner baseball card. N.J. auction house brokered ‘Holy Grail’ sale.

In terms of collectables, the T206 Honus Wagner is the Holy Grail of trading cards, after fewer than 200 were produced more than a century ago, and only a fraction of that number remain.

The rarity and mystique that gives surviving Wagner cards their value stems from the demand Wagner made that his card’s production be halted because he didn’t like that it was included in packs of cigarettes sold to kids, or so the story goes.

On Wednesday, a New Jersey auction house specializing in sports and music memorabilia announced a new record for the highest price ever paid for a T206 Wagner — $3.25 million — in a sale the company had brokered between a buyer and a seller from the Midwest.

“It’s the most spent for a Honus Wagner card,” Dylan Kosinski, president of the Franklin Lakes-based auction house, Gotta Have Rock and Roll, told NJ Advance
