WATERLOO — The city is receiving nearly $3.4 million in federal funds to address lead paint and safety hazards in low-income homes.

The award will be presented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development at a Thursday morning ceremony at City Hall, according to a news release. City officials, medical workers and social service providers will use the money to address lead issues in more than 100 housing units.

City receives $1.4 million HUD grant for lead abatement in low-income households

LANCASTER – The city on Wednesday received a $1.4 million grant from the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development to remove lead and other hazards from 60 low-income households with children under 6.

“We are very happy that a smaller city got some recognition and got some benefit,” Mayor David Scheffler said. “We’re very happy that we can help 60 homes in Lancaster and the surrounding county.”

Lancaster was one of only four Ohio cities to received funding. Toledo will receive $5.7 million Cincinnati will get $3.5 million and Hamilton County will get $2 million, for a total of $12.6 million going to the state in total.

All told, HUD is giving out $165 million to 44 state and local governments in 23 states. The money is from its Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction grant program.
