A number of recreational areas throughout Dutchess County are named after the estates or property formerly owned by early residents. Such is the case with Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park in Staatsburg, James Baird State Park in LaGrange and Bowdoin Park in Poughkeepsie.
The latter of these grounds was one of several estates that once existed along today’s Sheafe Road in the southeast portion of the town. The county park is named after the Bowdoin family from New York City, who first established a weekend retreat there in the 1880s.
