Over the past seven months, air traffic at Southwest Florida International Airport has plunged, first by 95% in April and since June between 55% and 59% of what it had been during a record-breaking 2019.

The Lee County Port Authority has adjusted.

The port authority delayed its planned $250 million terminal expansion project by at least a year. It enacted emergency cost-cutting measures that will save $6 million this fiscal year.

It continued managing construction projects funded by the federal government and state department of transportation such as the new, $80 million air traffic control tower, now rising on the northeast side of the airport and visible from Chamberlain Parkway and from the windows of the airport’s terminal.
