After Mid-Day report on BMC leader ‘threatening’ contractor, BJP says standing committee chief must resign

After mid-day’s exclusive front-page report about Standing Committee Chairman and Shiv Sena Corporator Yashwant Jadhav allegedly threatening a representative of a contracting firm to withdraw from projects in his E ward (Byculla), the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to take potshots at its former ally. BJP’s group leader in the BMC Prabhakar Shinde demanded a high-level probe and Jadhav’s resignation on Tuesday.

Jadhav allegedly called Surajpratapsingh Deora, a representative of Yash Corporation, asking him to withdraw from projects the firm bagged for the first time through the e-tender process. Deora recorded the entire conversation and this paper is in possession of the audio clip. “The standing committee chairman’s act has earned a bad name for a prestigious and reputed institute like BMC. Hence, Jadhav should immediately step down from the post,” Shinde told mid-day.

Rising flood risk seen threatening scant supply of low-cost U.S. homes

WASHINGTON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Rising seas linked to climate change are expected to triple the amount of affordable housing at risk from flooding in U.S. coastal areas within three decades, exacerbating a nationwide shortage of low-cost homes, research showed on Tuesday.

About 25,000 homes could flood at least once a year by 2050, according to first-time national estimates from the nonprofits Climate Central and the National Housing Trust, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters.

The findings are especially concerning given that the country already faces a shortfall of 7 million affordable units, said co-author Todd Nedwick, a policy director at the National Housing Trust.

“Even before we talk about making these buildings more resilient, we don’t have the resources to increase the supply, so I hope this helps spotlight the need for investments in these at-risk communities,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
