COVID-19 cases for patients in Ohio’s nursing homes up 64% in last 2 weeks; deaths now total 3,344

CLEVELAND, Ohio – As coronavirus cases in Ohio’s nursing homes and other long-term care facilities spike, another 74 deaths were reported Wednesday in the weekly update from the Ohio Department of Health.

At least 3,344 patients of long-term care facilities have died since the onset of the virus early this year, accounting for 60.4% of the 5,539 coronavirus deaths reported to date in Ohio. The share has been shrinking. It was over 70% in late May.

However, new case reports have shot up 64% for patients at the facilities in the last two weeks.

A total of 1,788 patients and 1,228 staff currently have coronavirus, according to the update, in comparison to 1,585 patients and 980 staff last week, and 1,087 and 755 two weeks ago.
